I found the 9190 to be a great tool. It provides all the data I was looking for and displays in graph form data streems that I was needing to see.
The Snap On scantools are much more exspensive and the Actron makes looking into ones own car service affordable. Thanks Actron

I brought this product twice as gifts for family memebers. This product is very handy and works great.

Actron CP9190 Elite
Works great. Has already paid for itself in helping to diagnose problems several times. Clear instructions and very easy to use.
All of my vehicles are out of warranty now and I must attempt to repair myself. Being an old shade tree mechanic and not very up to date on the newer systems, this tool has helped me come up to speed.
Most of the dealers and shops around here want at least 75 bucks just for a diagnostic check. At the very least this tool will allow you to see what codes are present and help give you a leg up on those high and mighty service writers at the shops.

Not what I needed
I was looking for hardcore material on OBD.
I too was fooled by the preview. You can find the same info on the Internet.
The book publishers have done a fantastic job of packaging and making an ordinary book with common information look exceptional.
What people want to know is how to use the information in the powertrain control module to solve problems. This book simply tells you what's available in OBD 2 not what to do with the info. Pages are devoted to OBD 2 codes that can be found on the Internet. If you need a glossy intro to OBD 2 this is it.

Doesn't deliver the goods
This book doesn't reveal any secrets,or for that matter much information.
It is rather long on OBD II theory and has a fairly good chapter on scan tool selection but falls far short in the diagnostic department.
I had hoped this book would have information on acceptable sensor values, troubleshooting / diagnostic charts, etc.
As far as diagnosis goes, this book is just one small step ahead of a trouble code chart. Since most of the newer scan tools incorporate this information in the tool itself I would recommend that you save the price of this book and apply it to a better tool.

Not what I expected
I thought from reading the sample pages that this book would explain codes and a brief explanation as to what to check for each code.
It was more of an overview of ODBII with some details I could use.

My 3140 arrived with PC_SOFTWARE 1.32, and FIRMWARE 1.01
To update:
Install the software from the CD onto your computer, connect the tool to the PC, and turn on the tool. A "USB Serial Adapter" such as Keyspan High Speed USB Serial Adapter ( USA-19HS ) makes this much easier.
Select "Update" from the PC software menu --- and it will say a PC_SOFTWARE update is available, but your hardware is "up to date".
Download the new PC software (17 mb file), install, and run it.
Hit "Update" again now, and it will say that a FIRMWARE update is available. Download the new 'BIN' file (2 mb), and install it in the tool as outlined in the directions.
Currently I have PC_SOFTWARE 1.33, and FIRMWARE 1.02

I needed a test unit capable of testing older cars as well as OBD II equiped units. I live in an emissions state and had a SES light on in a '97 Taurus SHO I recently bought for commutes to work. I also had a pending test date for emissions on my wifes 2002 AWD Town & Country. I used it to easily confirm a positive emissions compliance on the van, and a bad rear O2 on the car. I've used it on a friends S-10 to find an Evap problem. I have several pre 1995 cars which I have not tested yet, but have all the connectors for included in the purchase. The definition is on the screen when the unit displays the code. There is no need to look up the definition. I've hooked up to a Ford, Chrysler and Chevy and had results in seconds. Very easy to use. Like any car diagnostics a manual or subscription to a car service should be used with this product.

I've been working on cars a while now and I've used a few of these type of code readers/scanners (Snap-on and Mac) and I've found that this one does almost everything you would expect a pro model to do and a price that can't be beat. Shows everything you really need to know, the screen is very large and easy to read, the button layout is good, but can be confusing at first, there should have been an extra button or two as some of the controls do double or triple duty, you have to read the manual and have it on hand until you get used to the controls. I've used it right away to diagnose a problem in my late model truck and have plugged it in to a number of makes and models with great success. It's results are almost as detailed as say the Snap-on, but it costs 1/10 the price! The included software is nice, but not as full featured as it should be in saving data results. I highly recommend doing a firmware update to the unit, mine shipped with firmware 1.0 and the new firmware v2 adds some extra diagnostic functions, such as advanced DTC codes for some makes and updates the DTC code library in the unit, the unit seemed to read live data faster as well. Being able to read OBD I codes is a plus, but there are many limitations on the makes and models, a glaring omission is the lack of Nissan OBD I (Just because I own a older Nissan!). I do all my own repairs and would highly recommend this unit. The unit comes with two nylon cases, one for the unit, OBD II cable, manual and the other for pc serial cable and OBD I adapters and the cases zip together for easy transport. I do have one big complaint, this is 2007, who uses serial connectors anymore? my laptop does not even have one, I have to go out and buy a serial to USB2.0 adapter, it works well and the unit synced fine with my laptop with the adapter, but you would figure that they would have put the serial connector to rest by now.

This machine will tell you your check engine light and give you live data for checking the components as they are transmitting their info. I use the the expensive model at work, quite frankly when it comes to hook up and code reading this machine is simpler and quicker. I realize the expensive model has the abs & body control features and can do a lot of other functions; but work on the side is mainly the "check engine" lights. The price on this computer from Amazon cannot be beat, for having this type of technology.

This product allows you to capture data from the ODBC II port on most newer vehicles. I found it easy to use and I'm the kind of person who will log data from all my cars and keep it for future reference. When the car isn't running right, I'll use the old data for diagnosis. My only complaint is that the CarChip only logs 4 signals in addition to vehicle speed and only a small set of the available signals. I'd rather it log more signals at once. For that, I'd be happy to trade off how long it can log data for more signals. For example, with a Chevy V8 engine, you cannot log the fuel trim for both cylinder banks and all 4 O2 sensor signals at the same time.

Equus built the 3120 to display on-screen DTC definitions and user interfaces in English, Spanish, or French, and the trilingual language selection is accessed via a simple menu command. With the included cables and software you can connect the scanner to your computer to generate, print, and save detailed diagnostic reports, and even update the 3130 via the Internet.

The 3130 links to all OBD II protocols including CAN (Controller Area Network). The tool captures and displays freeze frame data that will help you pinpoint and troubleshoot any problem. This device is equipped to retrieve the following OBD II diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs): Generic Codes (P0, P2, P3, and U0) and Manufacturer Specific Codes (P1, P3, and U1). Very good product. Small, light weight, easy to use unit. We were having difficulty reading codes on a Dodge SRT supercharged truck and this unit out performed a commercial unit that notably was several years old but had recently been software up dated (to the tune of over $1,000). We're planning to try the data log function next time at the track. I highly recommend this unit to commercial and drive way mechanics.

I plugged this scanner into my Suburban to help me understand why the "check engine" light was on and in seconds it told me that the EGR valve circuit was giving a fault indication. I followed the procedure in the service manual and quickly determined it to be a bad EGR valve. Replacement took minutes. Entire job was over and done with in about 30 minutes counting the time it took to drive to the autoparts store and return. What a timesaver and in the longerun a hughe money saver too!!
